Interpreting Medtner: A New Listening
Nikolai Medtner’s music occupies a unique place in the landscape of twentieth-century composition.
Its architecture is refined, its voice deeply internal, and its expressive world unlike that of any of his contemporaries. Yet most performances available today simplify this world, smoothing away the tensions and layers that make Medtner’s writing so singular.
The Medtner Code: Total Edition is built upon a different vision — an attempt to hear Medtner as he truly is.
1. The tension of the broken canon
Medtner often introduces subtle disruptions in a phrase: a single tone, a harmonic detour, a structural deviation that quietly breaks the expected order. These are not decorative irregularities but essential expressive events.
When they are ignored, the music becomes “normal”; when they are revealed, the form comes alive with quiet contradictions and depth.
2. Polyphony as inner architecture
Medtner is one of the most polyphonic composers of his time — though not in the conventional sense. His textures consist of multiple interacting strata, hidden dialogues, and inner movements that shape the expressive field.
To reduce this to “melody with accompaniment” is to lose the essence of his thinking. A true interpretation must bring these layers into audible conversation.
3. Timbre as dramaturgy
In Medtner, tone color is a structural force.
A shift of timbre marks a change of psychological perspective, directs the movement of the form, or alters the inner tension of a phrase. The sound itself becomes narrative.
This requires a performance grounded in listening, not merely technique.
4. A continuum of musical time
Medtner should not be confined to the vocabulary of late romanticism.
His music resonates with Bach’s architecture, Beethoven’s dialectics, Brahms’s density, the transparency of Silvestrov, the spatial thinking of Nono.
Playing Medtner within this expanded continuum allows his music to reveal its full expressive gravity — highlighting both its roots and its prophetic dimensions.
A Project of Discovery
The purpose of The Medtner Code is not only to record Medtner’s complete works, but to revive the interpretative intelligence his music demands.
It is a journey toward a deeper listening — to reveal the fractures, colors, and polyphonic tensions that shape his musical world, and to offer performances that arise from this understanding.
