The Medtner Code – Sergey Neller’s Complete Medtner Project
A global recording project created and led by conductor and pianist Sergey Neller, devoted to the complete musical legacy of Nikolai Medtner (1880–1951).
Conceived in connection with the 150th anniversary of Medtner’s birth in 2030, The Medtner Code brings his entire output into a growing audio-visual edition. Performance and score videos are published on YouTube, while the audio recordings are released through the project’s own independent label.
Hearing Medtner as a whole
Nikolai Medtner created one of the most distinctive musical worlds of the early twentieth century. Much of his music remains rarely performed, and a large part of his output is still known only in fragments.
The Medtner Code approaches the composer’s entire output as a connected musical world. A complete edition allows compositions separated by years or decades to be heard within the same artistic perspective. As the catalogue grows, connections across Medtner’s creative life become increasingly audible. Completeness itself becomes a form of interpretation.
Sergey Neller performs all of Medtner’s solo piano works and collaborates with singers and instrumentalists from different countries on the vocal and chamber repertoire. In the piano concertos, the project will extend into his work as a conductor. The performance videos are accompanied by short artistic introductions, offering an insight into the interpretative ideas behind the recordings.
Since April 2025, thirteen opus numbers — more than four hours of music — have already been recorded in professional sessions in Germany and Hungary. Each new release opens another part of Medtner’s extraordinary catalogue to listeners. The aim of The Medtner Code is to make this music available as a living, interconnected body of work and to change the way Medtner is heard and understood.
